I was off the aircraft shortly after leaving the cockpit and saying my final thanks to the crew. I was disembarking through door 1L on the lower deck (is that L1L or 1LL?) and headed through the crowds of TBIT. Apparently first class don’t get an express pass card in LAX but people connecting do. Even in Economy. well that kind of blows!

I made what felt like an endless journey through the bowels of TBIT from the newer gates all the way through to the crummie older side. The last time I had been through TBIT immigration had been October 2011 when I came over to visit for my job interviews. It hadn’t changed a bit. I was in line maybe 10-15 minutes and I wasn’t grilled nearly as much as when I head to Canada. Next thing I know I am grabbing my bags off the belt and heading to customs to try and explain exactly why I am carrying the nether regions of kangaroos in my luggage.

I did a bit of luggage jiggling once out into the terminal (change of clothes out, trip goodies in) and headed over to T3 where I could check in for my Virgin flight. I had made it through in far better time than expected (1h so far) and figured it may be a chance to get on the earlier seattle flight at 9am. I checked at the check in area and was told it was possible for $25 confirmed or free for stand by. Considering I didn’t want to have to wait around for the bags that I had paid good money for, it was going to be an extra $24 but I would be home hours earlier. What the hell!

Lots of taping and a swipe of my credit card later and I was off to security and for the first time in a week to do the dignity dance. Lines were substantial but not all that bad and in the end I made it from touchdown to lounge in just on 90 minutes. At the entrance to the Virgin Lounge I was reminded of the boarding time and advised flights were not announced and I also got my seat reassigned as I realised it was a middle seat. I had about 10 minutes in the lounge to get changed and get stuff sorted. Which was good but I was starting to feel not so good. Figured I had just eaten a bit to much at breakfast.

I headed down to the gate pretty shortly and there was a boarding call shortly after

Not much to talk about this flight. I board, stashed my gear and then started to zone in and out between consciousness and sickness. We took off back out over the ocean and turned north back over LA and then I don’t really remember much. I remember ordering some lunch (that I was going to stash and eat later anyway) and a bottle of water. I remember taking a bathroom stop cause I was feeling sick as hell and the seat belt sign going on while I was in there, but then by the time I came out it had been switched off again.

Upon approach into Seattle I was just wanting to get off the flight and die, I was not in a good state. So I didn’t hang around in Seattle when we landed. It was a boring quick flight. But that is good right? I grabbed my bags and got over to the car park to get to the shuttle stands, fought with the lift a little and was soon on my way to the car park where my truck awaited and I was home about 30 minutes later. Ready to crawl into a hole and die. That was not a good sign!

I was collected by a Qantas Staff member at the entry to the First Lounge (you don’t normally get this service) and I was escorted through “secondary” screening which was really just checking that I had a passport on me. Kinda pointless since I had to go through 3 previous checks to get to that point. From there I was taken downstairs via the Lift to the boarding area right as they were preboarding some economy families into the back of the whale’s belly (ie the rear of the lower deck of an A380).

I was brought to the boarding door where I was greeted and escorted directly to my seat and from there it was “let the show begin”. First up was an offer for a PDB of my choice… “Perhaps Champagne”. I then broke the news that I didn’t drink, so I took my usual sparkling water and I was informed it would be served with some almonds and olives. These promptly came back while I took heaps of empty cabin shots. Getting all the photos I could use I was all giddy and hadn’t even sat down when my drink came back and then I was offered an amenity kit and pyjamas (even double checking the right size).

I was so excited that without realising people were now coming on board and first was filling up. So I made sure to hop out of the way after stowing my gear. The first thing I like about first on Qantas is the overhead bins. They didn’t exist on Emirates (but then Qantas don’t have a shower so fair is fair) so thats one big difference, but that just meant I could store stuff out of the way and didn’t have it impede on me anywhere. Though there was space under the ottoman if I needed it (which I didn’t really but I stored my backpack here for most of the time).

With the cabin filling I noticed the cockpit was open so one of the other Cabin Crew who was serving my area came around to introduce himself and I did ask if it was possible to visit the cockpit, handed him my business card and figured what the hell. He came back advising that I can’t before departure but upon arrival it would be possible, the captain has my card and will let me know upon arrival. Well it was worth a try, but at least it wasn’t a no, more like a not right now.

As time settled on we got an announcement from the crew advising that we were waiting on 2 missing passengers and once found we could depart, but it was a good thing right now because with the tailwinds we would’ve arrived before the opening of LAX. Woops!! I was happy to wait, hell I would’ve loved a divert, some headwinds… anything to make that experience longer. Guess it wasn’t to be. My drink was refilled and eventually we shut up shop and pushed back just over half an hour late.

We taxied out of Melbourne and i realised the one complaint I have about the Qantas first suite on the A380. I can’t see out the windows! As an avgeek that is a must! O well I still had the Skycam which is located in the Tail. We took off to the south and then took the long way around the city to head towards Sydney and then out over the Pacific towards the USA. I loved the fact that now there was no going back and I was on my way home. I was looking forward to the rest of the flight as the real stuff was going to start.

During climb out I was just playing with things all excited and stuff and without even realising it, the seatbelt sign was off and we were free to move about. The crew came around to hand out the menus (which you can find here) for the flight but I knew what I was going with already. Tasting menu!! Didn’t care what was on it, I was doing it (pending there was nothing like “garlic this garlic that”). So I had a quick look over the menu but there wasn’t so it was an easy choice. I was offered my choice of beverages (going with Diet Coke) and here was my first mistake. When asked if I would like my Hors D’oeuvres (the first course of the tasting menu) with my drink. I said no. What I should’ve said was “not right now”

I settled in to finish off some stuff that I had been working on for the next hour or so and by that time it would be a good lunch time in Melbourne to start the tasting menu (which I was going to take my time at either way). Time flew by, a few drink refills later and the crew reappeared for my lunch. So I asked them to come back in a few minutes to set it all up and I shut down my stuff and packed it away and selected a movie to watch (went with The Aviator, a nice long movie to enjoy).

Then the show began. First up came the Soup course. It was nice and thick but not overly thick and the croutons were a good crunch. When I was part way through I thought for a second… shouldn’t there have been something else. the Hors D’oeuvres!. When the soup was collected I asked about that and then it came to light with the mix up. The crew apologise and we tried to sort out something as a replacement as they had all been taken. So what we came up with was to swap out one of the other menu items as a replacement course. None of the other smaller plates had items left.. damn. So the offer of the calzone or the chicken pot pie.. but they just sounded too big.

My brain came up with an awesome idea. Dessert! Lets have an extra sweet course. it was agreed and it was set up with the extra dessert safely tucked away. We continued on the food journey and next up was the Salad course of Roasted Beetroot & Goats Curd. O yeah, roasted beetroot salad. It was heavenly.

Then came the main course which I had the filet of Beef with a cabbage and potato gratin (or as an aussie would call it fancy potato bake). I had taken the horseradish option for the sauce and it came served with a good size dollop of horseradish cream. The one thing i was worried about was if the beef would be cooked ok and if it would be tender. Push test was ok, I cut it and she was good. Was a bit under medium well, which is more than the way I normally have it, but it was still really good.

With the end of the main course, I decided to take a break for a bit and watch some more of the movie. About half an hour later my cheese plate arrived. Plenty of cheese and more into the belly. I am not a big blue cheese fan so avoided that. I also let the crew know that I would wait about 15 minutes after finishing the cheese for dessert… number 1.

Dessert #1 arrived dead on time, and it was the Honey Cake which was deliciously decadent. It was a nice spongy syrupy cake with a good fig compote on the side. By the time that was finished about 5 minutes after that out came the second dessert

The second dessert was the Chocolate Bread & Butter pudding. When it came out it looked deceptive. It smelt divine, so rich and chocolatey. It looked like it was going to be just all chocolate and very rich. But upon first scoop and bite it was light, fluffy and tasty!! It was definitely not what it seemed.

A coffee was delivered soon after the dessert arrived and I had a choice of some very nice Chocolates to go with it. As I finished up the dessert and it was cleared away and a fresh coffee brought over, It was now almost 2 hours since I started lunch. Wow! It did not feel like that! Lunch complete, work complete. Time to relax. Seat to lounge mode it is!

I finished off the movie and the crew took me on a tour of the aircraft to see the lounge etc We had a good chat about the differences with Emirates and different aircraft (like comparing the noise levels within a 747 or the crew rest on the 380 vs the 787 or 747). I got myself some water to go with a few more chocolates and returned to the seat for another movie.

After a while I got a bit more tired so I asked for the seat to be turned into a bed (and I ducked upstairs to the lounge for a photo (in the hope there was no one in there this time). When I came back the bed was about half way made and I saw the mattress pad they were using. Full Lambswool! Wow… comfy looking! The setup was great and looked mighty comfy.

I settled in trying to get some sleep but it didn’t happen. But I did get some rest, it wasn’t sleep at all but it was better than nothing. I can see why people sleep easily on these flights because it was damn comfy! Eventually though I gave up on that, snuck a cookie from the galley (we were about 4 hours out of LA now and figured time for more movies). I was not even going to try a steak sandwich or anything bigger. I could see why the Singapore and Hong Kong flights only offered a light breakfast before landing with the tasting menu. You wouldn’t need any more food!

Around 2 hours out of LAX I could smell breakfast under way. Bacon can easily permeate the cabin. I had seen the Bircher muesli in the lounge and figured it would be the same recipe. Maybe worth a try over normal muesli. So ordered that along with the pancakes (as I went savoury in the lounge and they didn’t sound all that big) some coffee and a danish as my bakery item. No to big of a breakfast but a good end.

The bircher was good, would’ve preferred a little bit more crunch to offset the softness. The danish was good but the pancakes were the right size for that meal and the pears.. yum! Washed down by plenty more coffee and I was set!

As we slowly started to wake up and get ready for arrival into Los angeles I was really wanting it to just keep going but sadly it couldn’t We came in and started to descend turning for a north arrival right over Randys and In n Out. As we approached the sun was rising beautifully and from the Skycam I could tell we were getting a crosswind as we were crabbing it in. I never would’ve known unless I had the skycam but seeing an A380 crab in the arrival was amazing!

We touched down about 5 minutes late and took a long slow taxi back to TBIT. With that the flight was over 🙁 I would be kicked off back to the land of TSA Hell, dignity loss and nude o’ scopes at every turn. I had waited around for everyone else to head off (I had 5 hours I wasn’t in a hurry) and before I walked out I was invited into the cockpit! Score!

I had a quick chat with the crew, thanked them for a great flight and mentioned the crabbing and was told there was still a 30 kt crosswind at 1000ft. wow.. that was hefty cause I didn’t feel a thing! With a brief photo in the captains seat. I was off into TBIT.

Tuesday 9th April 2013

This was going to be an early start, with a flight time that moved forward 20 mins a day or two out, and then a morning departure and wanting to make sure that I spent as much time in the lounge as possible, it was a given.

So at 230am! I was up and hitting the gym for a workout. Why? Well because then i could justify all the goodness that was ahead of me. My pickup was 430am. Why so early? Well check in was meant to be 4 hours prior to my flight and that time with an average of 30 minutes to the airport would have me at the terminal just before that 4 hour mark to check in.

My ride picked me up dead on time! Unfortunately no free limo from Qantas for me as it doesn’t apply to the USA routes till later in the year, but i still rode in style! I had found a recommendation for a reliable driver who offered pretty good rates, so thats what I went with. It’s not my fault he drives an M Class Mercedes! Sadly there was no traffic and we made it to the airport in 20 minutes! With a new departure time of the flight of 915 I wouldn’t be able to check in for a bit yet, sadly when I approached the First Class Check in, they told me they no longer start check in 4 hours prior but 3.5 hours prior. So I had just under an hour to wait 🙁

So I did what anyone does, I sat down, and used the free wifi! It was damn comfortable in the Marc Newson designed chairs (same as in the lounge) and just did a lot of the work there, that I was intending on doing in the lounge (like responding to emails, checking in for my VX flight home to Seattle) that sort of thing. So really I didn’t lose any time! One thing the staff did for me was book a spa time. 730am Spa appointment was confirmed (apparently they had tried calling me the day before but they called my US number).

Once I was allowed to check in (and mind you they had it all ready for me) I was bags checked to Los Angeles, express path card in hand (not that I needed it at that hour) and lounge instructions given. I was on a mission to get through as quickly as possible. Security was pretty painless (they had the nude o scopes going but only selected at random and you got to go to the front of the queue if you were selected) and then immigration was painless as well (though they refused to stamp my passport). Now that I was officially no longer “in” Australia I was stuck in the giant (and i mean giant) duty free store. I did buy some candy for all the people back home and headed for the lounge. Total time Check In to Lounge… 15 mins!

Once I got up to the lounge, I was super excited. I was greeted in (after a few photos of the door etc) and I also handed over my Business Card to hopefully set up a pre board for some photos etc. The staff could not do enough, they took me on a tour of the lounge, offered to help me in anyway they could. I decided to take some time taking photos of the lounge and exploring while it was quiet and I ordered a coffee to kick start my morning. Coffee was good, photos were good. I was enjoying the lounge! It looked magnificent, had anything you could want (even a stocked library with some nice Avgeek titles). The bathrooms even had fully stocked toiletries (i may now have some of the moisturizers in my collection).

With all of the exploring and photos out of the way, it was time for a spot of breakfast! What to have what to have!! So many options. Do I go sweet, do I go savoury. Decisions decisions. (The Full Menu is Here) I started off with some Fruit and some Yoghurt. The yoghurt was sheep’s milk yoghurt and came with some Figs, honey and Toasted hazelnuts. The figs were amazing! The fruit was just spectacularly fresh!

Then it was time for the main course. I liked the sound of the Egg white omelette over the Normal omelette so ordered that with a side of bacon and roasted field mushrooms. It automatically came with Sourdough toast but I wanted rye so I never touched it. The omelet was delicious and the bacon was good (though I should’ve ordered it crispy). When that was all said and done I ordered some Rye toast and out came 2 thick slices of Brasserie Bread New York Rye… YUM!! With all the different jam options (Triple Berry, Marmalade or Lime & Passionfruit) along with Vegemite, I had plenty of choices.

With breakfast now filled me up, my spa appointment time was fast approaching. So I packed up my stuff and headed over to the spa for my free 30 minute massage. I grabbed a quick few photos of one of the smaller treatment rooms (a few jokes with the staff suggesting they can put one of the hotter ladies in the photos for me if I wanted). While they asked what I wanted during my massage my response was simple. Legs, dear god just fix my legs!

A lovely 30 minute massage later (and my treatment room had some of the most amazing views) and I was in heaven. Spa… check, breakfast… check… time for a drink (some water this time) and a few sneaky pastries I think while I waited to be collected for the pre boarding. Time had gone by so quickly this was only a matter of minutes away… my time in the lounge was coming to an end… did I have to leave?

I was collected and then it was going to be off to the aircraft… ready for the main event!

After taking the Skybus from the Airport to the city and then using their free connecting shuttle to my hotel, I was looking forward to relaxing for a bit. I was staying at the Langham at Southbank and before even contemplating staying there had scammed an elite status with their loyalty program. Add into the fact that the travel agents I deal with at work rave about this hotel, I just had to check it out. Check in was painless and my bags were taken off me and I headed up to my room, where a few moments later my bags joined me.

I settled into an afternoon of relaxing to catch up on some stuff I had not been able to do up till this point and just before I was due to meet a friend for dinner I encountered a problem with the aircon in my room, but it was fixed with ease and didn’t require a room move. I left the Langham (not before being told by the staff that I must take an Umbrella with me and they wouldn’t let me leave without one) and walked over to Fed Square to meet up with my friend Ross, lay down a sticker somewhere that was visible that I had been wanting to do for a while.

I spent the evening catching up with Ross over dinner of Laksa on Racecourse Road in Flemington at an extremely busy Laksa King (Curry Combination Laksa recommended) and a failed attempt for some ice cream. I retired for the evening totally beat and looking forward to a comfy bed.

Monday 8th April 2013

A sound sleep on an absolutely comfy bed and I was as happy as larry. Up early for a morning run along the yarra river. As I got to the ground floor lobby I noticed a pile of water bottles right by the door to the lifts. That was odd I thought, I looked a bit closer and it turns out they have a “Jogging Station” including a suggested jogging map. Nice! I asked how long the run was and they said they thought it was about 3.5km, not long enough for me so I said thanks anyway and headed off on my own little route that I had kind of worked out the night before.

5km run complete and I got myself ready for my breakfast meeting with the hotel rep and a site inspection through the hotel, though I won’t go through what happened (as it would be boring to everyone really) what I will comment on is the breakfast buffet at the Langham. Just WOW! It had just about everything you could want including a chocolate fondue fountain and a pancake station… with ICE CREAM! Though I was going for a healthy morning I grabbed a bowl of good thick porridge, just the way I like it!

After the breakfast and site inspection I finished off some work I had intended on doing the night before and had skipped, writing up some trip reports, some articles, clearing out some of the trash in my email accounts (how much junk i accumulate is crazy). After a good relax and productivity I packed up my stuff right as the housekeeping staff turned up to clean my room. Good timing! Off I headed (after a quick turnaround cause I forgot my ipod) to walk my way to a catch up with some friends for lunch.

After lunch with friends and having to head off way too soon (hate leaving my friends) and I hit the streets to walk away the afternoon. I was on a mission. Walk back to the city (did I mention that I was walking for two reasons, one I hate Melbourne public transport and two I was happy to enjoy the sunshine and exercise) and do my supply shopping before repacking and having a quiet night in.

First up on the purchase list was a scout of all the tacky souvenir stores in Melbourne for some birthday gifts (well in advance kind of thing) for some people. Something unique to Australia… Kangaroo Scrotum! My friends couldn’t believe that as Aussies we tend to use the entirety of the Kangaroo. I scouted out all the stores before purchasing as they were all in a line and figured that I would get them on the way back to the hotel.

So with the scouting done I decided to walk over to Crumpler just to check it out since it had been forever since I had even seen a crumpler store and i was having withdrawls. I came out of the store only having spent $3 on a keyring of one of the old school crumpler zips. Something that they don’t use on their new bags.

From Crumpler it was over to Melbourne Central for a supermarket stop to get the supplies that I miss in the USA. Vegemite, Diet jelly and some candy for the people at work (well at least the first hit, I would get some more at the airport duty free). From there it was back to the tacky souveneir stores and back to the hotel. I packed up my suitcase and by this time it was getting fairly late in the afternoon.

My evening was quiet I was intending on spending that time relaxing. Watching some TV and then hitting the pillows really early. Because to be honest I was going to be up super early. I wanted to hit the gym before leaving the hotel, and since I had an morning flight and wanted to spend as much time in the lounge as possible, it was time to head to sleep, because tomorrow was going to be a truly epic adventure.

Sunday 07th April 2013

After a morning catch up with my friends over breakfast and a quick few last minute photo ops, I headed back towards the airport for my flight. It was still pretty early but there was a reason that I was going to do this that early. I wanted to get through to the airport a bit earlier as I needed to fill the car but next to the airport was something that I had wanted to check out. An Aussie costco. Now they were just opening up when I left Australia almost a year ago and they were pretty popular.

Since I had seen what the real costco was like (and I had actually been to the original costco), it would be nice to see what the aussie version is like. That and I had been told they had giant tubs of vegemite, which was going to be tempting to see if it would be worth taking one of them home compared to tubes.

So I stopped by and was surprised at just how expensive some things are in comparison to normal prices. To give you an idea 2 x 1125ml bottles of Bundy rum set me back $54 AUD duty free. Costco wanted 1 for $45. General 700ml bottles go for $45 at most bottle shops. So in the end the prices are still pretty high but cheaper than normal but not as cheap as duty free (in the booze scenarios).

With costco explored and the car filled (at $1.55 per litre, which equates to $6.20 per gallon) I was wishing that things were not over so soon. Unfortunately it meant that my time in the city was coming to a quick end and I had to go and head off. I dropped back the car and there was not a single person around to scan the car back in. So I grabbed all my stuff and headed back inside the airport, to which when I dropped it all off, the person was almost wanting to just get rid of me without a receipt or anything. O how much I was wishing that I had National over in Australia as well.

Car dropped off I headed upstairs to departures and the terminal was EMPTY! The new Canberra airport is almost finished and it was really nicely designed and looked a treat so I was totally looking forward to exploring some of the newer areas. Last time I had been through only the Qantas side had opened but barely 2 weeks prior the new Virgin Australia side had opened. Which was great because I could see the new lounge. Check in was a bit slow thanks to an older lady who wasn’t even flying that day tying up the staff complaining about baggage costs or something. Eventually an extra staff member had to come over and check me in cause the old lady was causing hassles.

While checking in I was asked if I had been through the new lounge and was given directions to it from check in, which was very welcome as I had no idea where the new lounge was. Security took all of 30 seconds. Shoes still on, belt still on, watch still on (hear that Brisbane airport), only thing required out was my laptop. No silly liquid restrictions either!. Hell thll the new security check point had comfy looking couches so if you needed to remove your boots or something (if they had metal in them) you could do so comfortably. God I was going to miss this!

The flight wasn’t going to board for a good 90 minutes or so, so I had plenty of time to relax in the lounge, catch up on some work and have a chat to my folks and touch base with them, maybe even make a few other phone calls. So off I went to the new lounge following the directions I was given (through security, turn left, up about 40m, through the glass doors, up the escalators, turn around and you can’t miss it).

The new lounge follows the same design as Brisbane, Melbourne and to some extent Sydney (though the Sydney lounge has not yet finished refurbishment) but damn it was nice! So open and beautiful! Big picture windows with the best views of the runway (perfect for spotting). The lounge was very quiet with only about 15 people there, but could easily hold about 150. Perfect to my liking as I like quiet (which is what i like about lounge access).

The lounge had the usual lunchtime offerings so after a couple of coffees, some work, some spotting and a nice healthy lunch of sandwich, salad and pumpkin soup (god yes!) it was time to get myself ready for the flight. It was at this point i realised something not so good. I had NOT brought with me my earplanes (which are special kind of earplug that I have to wear). I had left them in my suitcase which was now checked in. I would have to go and purchase some.

There is only one problem with that, though they are readily available in the airports the cost to buy them in Australia is extortionate compared to the US. I usually pay about $4 a pair at walmart (each pair is good for a return flight) whereas over here in Aus the airport pricing is almost $20, off airport you are lucky to get them for about $12-15.

So when my aircraft landed I knew it was time to head down to the gate via the newsagent to bend over and take that wallet hit. With that handled I headed over to the gate itself to wait for boarding which was not all that far away from when I got there. People were lining up everywhere and I heard a lady bitching about elite guests and how they always take up the overhead bin space. seriously? She had 4 bags herself!

Virgin Australia – VA268

Top of Descent: 1343
Touch Down: 1407 (Runway 27)

Boarding was called and I had to wait for the loan person to finish his announcement so that I could get onboard as I wanted an empty cabin shot as I wasn’t sure but I had a feeling about this specific aircraft. That feeling was justified when I walked onboard. BSI! Yep that’s right. Boeing Sky Interior! I had only ever flown 1 flight with a BSI and I was up front in Business so this would be good to see it from the Economy perspective.

I was totally impressed and I still love this aspect of the new 737 fit outs. Other than that this was a pretty normal flight with Virgin Australia. The boarding process took a while but we pushed back on time pretty much and taxied out past all the Qantas Aircraft (but I had sat on the wrong side as usual, why do I always go for A seats?). We held short of the runway for a bit for some reason, there was no arriving or departing traffic ahead of us, so maybe the crew were double checking something? Maybe the sequester is affecting Australian Airports to 😉

When we finally turned onto the active, gave the engines some JP1 and hit the skies it was good to know that the last leg of my qualifying was now over. With me in the air and winging my way to melbourne on this short 45 minute flight (as announced) it would all be over. I settled in for the usual Capital Connect freebie service, with my book and that’s about it really. We took off to the north, looped around the city to the right and headed south for Victoria.

The free service was the usual, juice, water and “take this snack or your getting nothing” option which today was some savory biscuits but since I wasn’t hungry, into my bag they went. The water did help though.

As we approached melbourne the clouds came in and it turns out that some weather that we should’ve avoided was looking like it was going to hit earlier so our forecast of “all is good” became “sorry you will get wet now”. But the landing on the cross runway at Melbourne was non eventful and as we taxied the long way back to the terminal we got a good sight of 3 different Whale Jets (SQ, EK & QF) all at the gates along with Cathay, China Southern, Malaysian and even a Thai 777 about to head skyward for Bangkok.

We pulled into our assigned gate easily and with that my flight was over. Boring yet true! I grabbed all my stuff and fought the crowds to get out of the plane and then saw just how busy this place was today. It was packed! So many people, security was a mess of people as well. But it was a sunday in Prime weekend flight returns so people heading home etc.

I dropped by the Lounge to say hi to an old friend who works there and then went off on my way to the baggage claim where my bag was doing laps of the belt, single, solitary and all alone. I was lucky the AFP had not yet destroyed it as a suspicious package. With suitcase in hand, I paid for a Skybus ticket and I was off to the city. Quickly & Easily. Shouldn’t travel always be this effortless?

Friday 5th April, 2013

By the time I had reached Brisbane I had no idea what day of the week it was, nor where I was and I think my body by this point was running on pure adrenaline but it was good to get home, pick up some stuff and spend a few hours with my folks and also catch up really quickly with some of my old work colleagues and drop off a gift or two.

Pretty soon though my flight time was approaching and I was returning to the airport mere hours after I had landed. This is what it felt like to be an american! Always on the go! I was dropped off back at the Domestic Terminal this time and man was it like being back home as this terminal had been like a second home. I even contemplated heading around to the loop road even if for a few minutes. But I needed to get my phone fixed and clear out some emails, which I managed to do.

Considering todays flights were a semi mileage run as I needed to make 4 Virgin Australia segments to requalify so had staged my flights to Canberra with a 2 hour layover to force the ability for seperate bookings. However about 2 or 3 months after booking this, Virgin Australia changed their rules and alowed points on all segments regardless of how it was booked. Damn!! I could of gotten this with only a 30 minute layover 🙁

After being told my flight was super delayed at check in they would try and move it to the earlier flight but this did not seem to work either and eventually I think he just gave up and told me that he couldn’t move me but my connection in Sydney was sufficent enough anyway. I had told the person checking me in that I did not want to move to a direct flight as I needed the extra segment to requalify and he was wondering why till I explained it to him. Then it was like a switch went off in his head.

I was mentally preparing myself for TSA style security though and ditching all my gear into my backpack and was ready to start removing my shoes and my belt but then was told by the security officers nicely that I need not worry, all that much as they were not nearly as strict. In fact they were so nice it felt wrong. I did have to end up removing my belt and my watch as it seems nothing has changed with the Brisbane metal detectors as they are still super sensative but it was nice to keep my shoes on and not be nude o scoped or yelled at.

Once through security my old stomping ground laid ahead of me and I was quickly through the airport to the lounge for more coffee. I also double checked the status of my flight and was told it was now running on time…. wierd. Things certainly were wierd because even though my flight showed on time departure I was getting tripit alerts telling me my arrival was delayed 2 hours! What the hell! A three hour flight to Sydney did not seem right but I kept being told it was all on time.

An espresso in the Lounge at Brisbane was welcome as the good coffee and the straight caffeine hit felt so good! I did chow down on these tiny little cookie bites to keep my body fueled as I was now starting to hit a slump where the sunburn from LA was kicking in, but the weather in Brisbane helped perk me up. Humidity!!! To be honest the thing I was looking forwards to the most was a bed, but that was still 2 flights away.

I got myself plugged in and the phone charged while I tried to set things up but that didn’t get all that far, hopefully I would have it all fixed up by the time I got to Canberra (dunno) but I did get to clear out all my emails and also get in a quick blog post to let everyone know I was alive, safe and well in Australia.

Just as I headed out of the lounge I heard the announcement pre warning of boarding in 10-15 minutes and that the flight was NOT delayed. When I got to the gate though I double checked that everything was 100% ok and explained what I was being emailed and they assured me it was fine and that I should relax. So I did (albeit freaking out another pax in the mean time).

Virgin Australia – VA950
Brisbane to Sydney
1300-1535
Embraer E190 (VH-ZPF)
Economy Class – Seat 6A

Boarding: 1240 (Gate 45)
Push Back: 1300
Take Off Roll: 1309 (Runway 19)
Top of Descent: 1501
Touch Down: 1519 (Runway 16L)
Shut Down: 1534 (Gate 42)

The flight was eventually called and I tried to get onboard as quickly as possible. I had thought this was a 737 flight but somewhere along the way either I wasn’t paying attention or it got equipment swapped as there was an E190 sitting at my gate. I didn’t have the amazingly good row 3 but 6 is good enough, especially on an E190 anyway. What it meant though was one last blast of Brisbane good weather before being on the flight as you got to tarmac walk (but I made sure to take a photo before touching the tarmac to avoid the yelling at that usually happened).

Once onboard I was pleasantly suprised to see that this E190 had been reconfigured to the same set up as the 737s have with the new Business Seats (not that it mattered to me all that much). I quickly stashed my gear and took my seat at Row 6 but then I remembered the one thing I didn’t like about these E190s. Offset windows! It’s nice to have windows at real height and all but why offset them, honestly.

We filled up pretty quick and as we did so I saw a non reving flight attendant walk onboard. She looked so familiar and then I saw the name tag. IT was her! My last mileage run in Australia had culminated in what I had described as being staffed by the best crew I had ever come across. Well that FA was standing right there. There was no way she would remember me, but I sure did remember her, and if I got the chance at some stage I figured I would say that I still thought she was the best crew I had ever dealt with to this day.

We shut up shop and pushed back dead on time and I snapped a good number of photos as we taxiied back out to 19 past the loop road (no one in attendance today) and without stopping or slowing down the pilot put the throttles forward, gave the tiny little engines some gas and pointed us towards the sky.

Thus begins a boring Virgin Australia flight as usual on the Brisbane to Sydney run. Up into the sky, seat belt sign off, laptop out, start working, Free tea, coffee or water (and thanks to my seat mate an offer of a free meal which I declined as I was going to rest up a bit in Sydney with some lunch) and a speedy journey south. I moved my clock forward again, totally confusing my body as to what the time actually was and I don’t think it ever caught up at all and soon enough we started descent into Sydney. tipping over and pointing earthward at that crazy angle you get in the “Jungle jets”.

I packed up my laptop (and stopped working on the trip report obviously) as we quickly began decsending into Sydney from the North. I was sitting on the A side for one simple reason. I was hoping for an approach over the City as that would give me the chance for those iconic shots of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge…. I was not dissapointed.

As we came in for final approach onto 16L aka the runway that is closer to New Zealand than it is the terminal in Sydney we flew straight past the Sydney city skyline and I got a good series of photos. As we plonked down on the runway it meant we were going to taxi quite a while from this point. But meh what can you do. I switched my new phone on in the hopes that things were working, which they were so that was good. I could finish getting it set up in the lounge.

As we had to hold for arriving traffic on one of the taxiways there was a good amount of heavies in at the International including Tulip United 744, new colours Thai, Etihad, Virgin Atlantic, 2 whales (1 Singapore, 1 Qantas) and a smattering of smaller stuff. It was good to be back in variety land! Brisbane is pretty boring traffic wise (then again so is Seattle really).

Finally reached the terminal and I could see the new extension to the gates at the end of the Virgin Pier and they did look nice from the outside, we pulled into gate 44 and the plane disgorged pretty quickly. I didn’t get a chance to approach Savannah so that was probably good on a creepy scale. Things were different in the pier though. Sydney Airport has definately had some work done in the last year and looks pretty swish!

There was a good amount of flash backs though as I walked towards the lounge, seeing familiar stores etc but there was a lot of new, fresh stuff as well. The old Escalators to the lounge were closed so it was up in the lift to the lounge I went then once checked in up the steps to the new upstairs extension (just to say I did). I was hunting two things. Power and Wifi. With those to things I could get my phone situation fixed up and then all would be setlted in the world. Both were fixed as I found a row of bench style couch on the far wall, plugged in, got my phone fixed then it was the other basic necessity…. lunch!

A quick toasted sandwhich, some nuts (though not the nut mix I used to like) and a small bowl of popcorn for something different and I was out of the lounge because it was getting super crowded. With my phone fixed and me not needing to worry much anymore I headed down towards the gate a little bit early. Being a walk out gate I wanted to get through early to make sure I could get a photo.

When I got to the gate though things didn’t look right, it was about 10 minutes to boarding, their was no aircraft and it was showing a time of departure 15 minutes late but no notice of the flight being delayed. Has my brain been totally off? I approached the staff and they did confirm the delay and apoligised and said they would make an announcement, which they did. I sat down and just got twitter working on my phone. Can’t hurt right?

Virgin Australia – VA662 (Operated by Skywest)
Sydney to Canberra
1735-1830
ATR-72-500 (VH-FVI)
Economy Class – Seat 15A

Boarding: 1730 (Gate 31)
Power Out: 1748
Take Off Roll: 1759 (Runway 16R)
Top of Descent: 1829
Touch Down: 1840 (Runway 35)
Shut Down: 1842 (Gate 9)

The plane eventually arrived, disgorged it’s pax and then boarding was called for us. I was first through as it was a really light load by the looks of it and about half way down the corridor one of the Cabin Crew who had walked off from the previous flight said out of no where “hey I’ve shot guns there” Not realising what the fuck he was talking about I just said “umm thanks” and kept walking. Then realised i was wearing my Machine Guns Vegas shirt… Awesome work dumb ass!

I snapped a quick picture from just inside the steps before heading out on the walk to the tarmac getting the last of the Sydney sunshine on my sunburn. Then with that it was up the tiny tiny steps into the aircraft. I was greeted again by a familiar face as the last time I had flown a Virgin Australia/Skywest ATR (only once from BNE to ROK) I had one of the same crew working the flight. How do i know this? How can I forget that beautiful face? She was stunning this crew member 😉

I tried to stash either of my bags in the overhead and failed miserably so gave up and just jammed them both under the seat in front in the hopes and desires that there would be no oe sitting next to me, cause I would of felt REALLY bad had that happened. In the end no one sat down. The flight was about half full and within less than 5 minutes we were buttoned up, safety briefing complete and powering out of the bay onto the taxiway.

As the smallest aircraft in the VA fleet passed the largest in the domestic fleet (VH-XFD pulled in about 2 gates up) we headed out quicky towards 16R (the main runway in Sydney) and joined the queue up of other domestic aircraft including a Qantas Dash 8, 737-800 and a Virgin 737-800 for departure.

When it was our turn, the piots gave the aircraft what little power these tiny turboprops have (sure aint no GE90) and the take off roll was suprisingly quick and we turned right back over the Southern Surburbs towards Canberra, climbing out with this wierd rainbow ring affect which was pretty cool.

As we climbed up the seatbelt sign went off soon enough and the crew completed their free service quickly. Beer, Wine, Juice or Water and a free “Sweet Box” today on the Capital Connect service. The “sweet box” was actually a dark chocolate brownie bite and tiny shortbread cookie. With the bottle of water it went down well. I read, I snapped a few photos and when we reached cruise we were only up there about 5 minutes before we started to descend again as total flight time today… 40 minutes!

Descent into Canberra was quick as the sun was setting and by the time we hit the ground I was glad to finally be at the end of my flying “Day”. I did manage to see one of the RAAF A330-MRTT at the RAAF installation along with a Dutch Air Force 757 from the tail markings (I don’t think it was a Kiwi one).

We pulled into the Gate on the older side of the Canberra Airport and as we disembarked it was into what looked like the old Gate area, however you had to follow the older terminal area through into the new one. Strange.

I got myself a bit lost in the terminal, ended up coming out at the Qantas baggage claim which was kind of convienient as it was next to the Rental car desks and I ended up grabbing the keys to my car (which was a crappy car compared to my LAX rental) and then grabbing my bag before heading off onto the Canberra streets.

Conclusion

After Dinner I bid farewell to Kevin and reluctantly handed the 300C back to National Rental Cars. I didn’t want to give up what felt like my new love but I had to as there was a long fight ahead of me and some faces I wanted to see on the other end.

I was on the shuttle back to the airport and check in once it was full (which took about 10 minutes at that hour of the night). Once we arrived at T3 I grabbed the Suitcase of doom (which thankfully wouldn’t exist for much longer) and I was heading towards check in. I have previously blogged about T3 at LAX (since it seems to be my common terminal to fly out of there) but tonight was different. I was checking in and dropping a bag off for a Virgin Australia flight, not Virgin America.

There was no wait at the priority check in as I handed over my passport and I was asked how many pieces of luggage I was checking. As i put the suitcase of doom on the scales I tried to distract her from the weight of the suitcase by asking about the loads of the flight, but it didn’t work. This bag was way over weight and would of set me back $100 in excess luggage weight, but I had a little trick up my sleeve. Since the suitcase was sacrificial on the other end I pulled a rabbit out of my hat and did what I didn’t really want to do till I got to Aus. I split the suitcase in half.

I pulled out the suitcase I was using for my flights out of the suitcase of doom and left all the giveaways and gifts and candy in the suitcase of doom. Zipped it up and now miraculously I had 2 pieces of checked luggage, well within my allotment of 3 x 23kg. HAHA! I win! This stunned the check in agent as she looked at me and said “You seriously had 2 suitcases in one?” I explained that the bigger suitcase was “returning to its owner” which although a little bit of a lie was more of a stretch of the truth as I was still the owner, it was just returning to its country of purchase and never going anywhere again since it had fulfilled its duty honoribly.

With bags checked, lounge invite in hand, boarding pass printed I consolidated my crap ready for security (and the destruction of my boarding pass by TSA with their random scribbles). Security wasn’t nearly the zoo it could of been as I had timed it well to avoid the Sydney flight which probably would of been full as it had been lately. This flight tonight though according to the agent was “About 90% full” pfft!

I had managed to snag myself an exit row, a consolidation prize since again, no upgrade with Virgin (suprise suprise) but this time not my usual seat as I was in the 2nd economy exit rows more towards the back of the aircraft. I headed up from security to the Virgin America lounge where nothing much had changed from my last visit in January though they did tell me they would call the flight at boarding time so that was good.

I settled in to finish off the night with the yummiest cookies that seem to exist in LA and a number of coffees and a view of the runway as the new colours Virgin Australia pushed back right infront of me as I sat down. My lounge time was spent between inhaling coffee and cookies, twitter and catching up on emails.

The time in the lounge seemed to fly by and as I was surrounded by Aussie Accents everywhere it really did feel like I was heading “home”. Though I feel like Seattle is my new home, I will always still love Australia and feel comfortable around the accents etc but it was good still to have that little reminder of my home country, even if I won’t get to spend much time there on this trip.

Virgin Australia – VA8
Los Angeles to Brisbane
2355-0700
Boeing 777-300ER (VH-VPE)
Economy Class – Seat 39A

Boarding: 2300 (Gate 38)
Push Back: 2355
Take Off Roll: 0019 (Runway 25R)
Top of Descent: 0641
Touch Down: 0702 (Runway 19)
Shut Down: 0708 (Gate 81)

I headed down to the gate a little early in the hopes of getting onboard first so that I can grab a few photos of the empty cabin and thankfully I did as they announced boarding about 10 minutes earlier than indicated which was a good omen I guess.

Even though I was flying on an aircraft that I had previouly flown on multiple times I was greeted onboard to the new look as it had been refurbished with the new seat designs. So the flight really was off to a good start. Even better is that unlike the previous exit row seats I have had which had no window, this exit row kind of did, though it was offset. But I won’t complan!

The boarding process was long and the cabin didnt fill but my exit row did (I wonder how much these guys paid for their exit row seats?). I should of really asked at check in if I could get a row of 3 to myself as there was plenty of opportunity for this with economy only about ⅓ full. A good portion of the pax had rows of 3 seats to themselves.

We were boarding complete a good 10 minutes before scheduled departure and since the full load of fuel had not yet been taken on, we had to wait and that meant numerous announcement not to buckle your seat belts yet. The Aussie accents were flying thick and fast not only on the crew but the passengers as well. It was good to be “home”

We pushed back dead on time as I was chatting away with my seat mate about Cars & truck prices in Aus vs the USA as he was a Dodge Fan and I was just happy to talk about my Ram and the 300C I had driven that day. Good way to start the flight. The flight attendant in my area was not at all happy with me snapping a photo during the safety demo, or having a pillow in the small of my back and kept admonishing me for every little thing (apparently having a pillow in my back is an impedanment to evacuation of the aircraft?). Whatever!

We taxiied all the way to the South side tonight which was wierd as the Sydney flight had taken off from the north (right infront of the lounge) and this was a serious waste of precious fuel and we were loaded down as we slowly taxiied around. After a brief hold just off the runway and a clearance to 25L the big GE90s wound up and started to scream bringing a smile to my face. Though I couldn’t see these beasts from my seat, I could feel and hear them. That sound as they wind up on the take off roll brings a smile to any Avgeeks face. Such raw power, I still stand by the saying that GE90s are the engine that doesn’t fly push the aircraft along, it sucks the world around below it so instead of pushing the aircraft to your destinatin, the engines pulls your destination to you!

Once at cruise I was greeted by the Cabin manager as expected being a Velocity Gold, offered a newspaper and given an express pass for Brisbane (another one since I have one stashed from last time, which now that I have two I might send them to a client or something… maybe). Dinner service was conducted quicky… REALLY quickly and we had been fed and watered and coffee/tea offered barely 90 minutes into the flight. The lights were dimmed, the cabin prepped for sleep and pretty soon people were conking out left right and center.

I tried to get some sleep but couldn’t find the right position so after a little while (about half way through the flight) gave up, went and had a chat with a couple of the extremely cute crew (this may have been the reason I went to ask a favour 😉 ) and got some work done over a coffee, before my laptop battery was due to die as there was no power up the back in economy…. sadly.

I had a bit of a mid flight snack that I had brought with me as there was nothing to snack on other than chips during the flight and I really don’t like them these days so after some nuts from the Virgin Lounge and a coffee I set in for a couple of movies, and to watch as we tracked over the pacific ocean leaving open ocean behind and approaching the islands as they appeared on the map display.

The sun rose as we tracked past Nadi (Fiji) and this brought with it a little bit of a realisation that I was now closer to Australia than I was to the USA or anywhere else. I was getting closer and closer to being back to my country of birth. Not that it was worth much of a difference but it was something to think about. The flight at this point was pretty boring actually. I managed to finish watching Argo (since I think i may have fallen asleep in the middle of it) and also watched all of Django Unchained which is almost 3 hours long. Just as I was finishing that movie the seatbelt sign went on and we hit some good lumpy bits for a little bit so I started another movie, Hurt Locker.

I was originally going to watch something else but figured I would save that for the way back (if Qantas has it as an option, if not I had it on my hard drive). After coming out of the turbulence we were about 2 hours out of Brisbane and the breakfast service had begun and I declined this really with just taking the small little bowl of fruit salad and getting some caffeine into me. I would have breakfast waiting for me at home in Brissie, so why have 2 of them (plus the two options didn’t really interest me all that much).

As we started a very very gradual descent into Brisbane the area around my seat became extremely crowded. I don’t think people on the flight quite understood that there were lavs at the very back of the aircraft and that there really wasn’t a wait for these at times. Each time I looked at the lav indicator (which pointed to the ones at the back of the aircraft) they showed as vacant yet these was generally a line of 6 or 7 people clammering to get into the one right infront of my seat. O well!

When we started our official descent into Brisbane about 25 minutes out I had just literally finished watching Hurt Locker so it was good timing. I was just in the middle of packing my stuff as it happened. As we came into Brisbane from over the bay on a direct 19 approach it was a bit of a shame as I kind of wanted to see a quick glimpse of the city. It was a bit surreal though as we approached the threshold of the airport as I had landed here so many times but yet it thrilled me every second of the way down, even if to some it was the most boring approach ever.

When we hit the ground they taxiied almost the full length of the runway before turning off which most long haul pilots dream of as within minutes of wheels on the ground we were at the gate, however it took 10 times that length for me to get off the aircraft as I was banished to the back of the plane it felt.

Once off the plane I tried to get through the process as quickly as possible to maximise my time with my family (what limited time that was) but it was almost a solid hour before I had cleared immigration, collected my bags and cleared customs. The problem was immigration and bags. As we had touched down you also had QF16 from LAX, Emirates from Dubai, Air Nuigini and also Singapore Airlines all at the same time. Heaps of widebodies disgorging passengers all at once. Not pleasant!

Baggage was slow and by the time i walked out of the doors into the terminal proper I could hear my mum shouting my name above the crowd and running after me. It was good to be home….. even if only for a couple of hours!

Conclusion

When I had my bag in hand at T6 well within Alaska’s 20 minute guidelines, it was time to get the shuttle to the hotel. When I last stayed at the hotel they operated their own shuttles and you had to call in to get them to come pick you up. However this is not the case anymore as they used the shared shuttle company (though with a dedicated bus) and it operates every 20 minutes 24 hours a day.

Once you finish the last pick up at T7/T8 you are mere moments away from the Radisson as it is the closest hotel to the Terminals being right at the entry road. They do tend to treat their Club Carlson members pretty well, as last time I had been upgraded to a nice big suite overlooking the runway. This time was no different. Even though I was on an industry rate and more than likely would not get any points from this stay, my Gold Benefits were still honoured.

The way they were honoured was a bit different from last time. Usually you recieve a giant cheese, fruit and wine platter upon arrival, however as I was arriving around 11pm at night and more than likely would not eat it I had let them know in advance to not worry about putting this into my room. Instead they noted that I had made this request when I checked in and out of the blue offered me Free Breakfast instead! Score!

My upgrade this time though was not the same suite as last time, it was more of a Junior Suite with no physically seperate living area but the room was huge! There was a 4 seater sofa and a smaller 3 seater, a giant Plasma Screen and small “office space”. But the one downside to the room. A tiny tiny bathroom… tiny! Such a big room footprint but only a small bathroom. Can’t have everything right.

It was here that I dropped the 60lb suitcase on my foot taking a huge chunk out of things making that transition to sleep all that more difficult but I managed. The Cake Pop and Chocolate coated strawberry left in my room (in addition to the free breakfast) helped soothe the pain a bit.

Wednesday 3rd April – 2013

After a morning run around the LAX perimeter where I was buzzed by plenty of CRJs and regional aircraft, but also an El Al 777 and a Philippines Airlines A340. It was time to get myself sorted for a mixed day ahead.

Breakfast was served in Palmera the hotel restaurant which had this old world kind of feel to it. It could of passed for a steakhouse in New York from the 60s with lots of big booths, dark woods, big comfy seats and not a single window. The breakfast buffet was unique with the usual basics you would expect from a hotel buffet but with the addition of cake… lots of cake. Not just muffins and pastries but chocolate donuts and pineapple upside down cake!

With breakfast consumed (although the oatmeal was watery) I was off to pick up my rental for a day exploring Los Angeles. I had booked a car for the day with National and knew that although the National office is a little bit further from the hotel than the likes of Hertz, Budget and Avis it was worth the walk, since I was working off a sneaky piece of cake. The usual process with National awaited me of getting to choose whatever I desired from the Executive Aisle (a benefit I must find a way to keep!).

As usual it seems my luck was again against me in LAX as there wasn’t much in the way of cars that I was hoping for. I was hoping for a Ford Escape or an Edge or some sort of SUV just to give them a try (I would of loved to try the new Escape to let my dad know what they are like) but there was none on the lot. It was all nissan all the time again. But with a few goodies strewn throughout. I did ask if there was any 300Cs or SUVs around that I could get, but someone had just snagged the last 300C on me and the only SUVs were Chevy Captiva’s.. .pass!

As I was about to jump into one of the 3 Dodge Challengers sitting on the lot (there was also a Mustang Hard top but that would not of fit the suitcase of doom very well) the lot attendant came running up to tell me that there was a 300C waiting for me if I still wanted it, freshly cleaned and sitting in prime position. I jumped at it and threw my bag into the car within seconds.

I did mention in this post just how much I LOVED this car. It had everything I could of wanted and more and was definately something I would of loved to of owned myself. Back home in Aus I can see why these are used by limo companies everywhere, they are a sweet ride!

I will admit to giving it a good thrashing up and down Aviation Boulevard during the day and using it to drive over to the California Science Center for a tour of the Shuttle Endeavour but my day was filled with the usual exploits for a stay in LAX. Plane Spotting. A bit different this time as I was not carrying the bigma and using my 70-300mm Travel lens. So although I don’t think my camera turned out my usual quality of camera, it was still a great day with some good unique catches.

I finished off my day of fun with dinner at the Proud Bird restaurant overlooking the southern runway approaches chatting with my mate Kevin from Aviation Photographic as I shouted him dinner for his birthday. A great way to end the day and prepare myself for a long flight ahead.

This will be the first of a few posts spanning a couple of months I an terming “The Breakfast Chronicles”.

My friend Yena surprised me a month or so back with a fantastic gift, shes coming to visit. Back home in Aus we had a little tradition of trying to outdo each other with amazing breakfast locales. Well I promised her the best breakfast in Seattle when she comes ti visit. So between now and August, time for “research”. I’ve already visited a few pretty great breakfast spots like Patty’s Egg Nest, Randys, Beth’s Cafe, Skillet Diner & The Maltby Cafe. There was one place that I had heard great things about though, Brown Bag Cafe.

The cafe is located in Kirkland just off the 405 (eaiser to access coming from the south, north requires a but of detouring). The cafe looks like tiyr generic Dennys/pizza hut style building from the outside. Inside is definitely a little bit more homely.

I got here and there was no wait, however as I was leaving (around 10am on a Sunday) the rush had hit and there was about a half hour wait for tables. Definitely come early if you dont like to wait. No counter though if you like that kind of thing (i do).

Big portions are the norm at some of these traditional diner style so be prepared for that. Come with an appetite! I was having a mini celebration of my own so made sure I ran first thing this morning.

More known for their baked goods and their home baked breads I was more in a pancake mood and the Banana Pecan pancakes were just what I wanted, went with a “Full Stack” which I thought would be 4 pancakes. It was only 3 (which is how many i wanted anyway).

From Seattle Life 2013

The service was slow but the food not to bad. Took a good half hour or more for my pancakes to come out but that I guess isn’t to bad. Gave me plenty of time to write a few emails etc. The pancakes were big but bot overly huge. They were ‘plate’ size but not pizza pan size like at Randys. The short stack of 2 probably would of been better in hindsight.

From Seattle Life 2013

When they first came out I saw the garnish of bananas on top and thought “is that it?” I didn’t realise until I was a few bites in that there was a goof amount of banana and pecans in the pancakes themselves.  Pretty good amount actually.

From Seattle Life 2013

Price wasn’t bad with a scoop of ice cream to go with my pancakes (i like ice cream with sweet pancakes not butter/cream), coffee and tip & tax came out to $20 and for the amount of food, worth it. I saw other plates come out and it all looked good.

Food was good, service slow, atmosphere ok, not a bad option, but I would probably go to Maltby first over Brown Bag.

Conclusion

Apoligies in advance but this is going to be the most boring portion of this trip report.  By the time I made it through to Check in at T3 and found out that I couldn’t get home any earlier.  I was just totally over it.  I was tired and wanting some sleep.  But that wasn’t going to happen.  I had 5 hours to waste, so I figured I would clear TSA and head to the International Terminal to the United Club there, I had never been there before and figured it might as well be worth visiting.

I cleared TSA (and at the same time, forgot that I had a bottle of water in my bag… absolute fail move) and then by the time I was finally through I had missed out on the Air China 747 pushing back.  I walked on over to the United Club, and wow… is it crap compared to a Delta Sky Club.  I have to admit… Delta wins the lounge competition that is for sure!

I settled in and caught up on the trip report and some other work, and then by the time that was finished I figured incase I fell asleep in the lounge, it would probably be smarter to at least be in the right terminal.  So I walked over to Terminal 3 and the united club there, and then promptly did the most boring thing ever.  I sat back and trolled the internet.  I wrote a couple of letters, I did some reading, I spent some cash ordering a new running watch.  O so thrilling.

What I was not to proud about doing was eating my weight in Chocolate Coated Pretzels.  Yes they are tasty, but it was a stupid move doing that.  Pretty sure I made myself sick eating them.  I got so tired and angry at myself that i decided to go and do a lap of the entire terminal, then go hang out by the gate and remote into work with the free wifi and test out the laptop connection ready for my next trip.

The gate area was ok, fairly empty and I just settled in with the rest of the crowds waiting for the flight to board as I did a bit of work.

United Airlines – UA971
San Francisco to Seattle-Tacoma
1932-2141
Airbus A319 (N863UA)
Economy Class – Seat 25A

Boarding: 1855 (Gate 68)
Push Back: 1930
Take Off Roll: 1845 (Runway 1R)
Top of Descent: 2103
Touch Down: 2131 (Runway 34C)
Shut Down: 2136 (Gate N16)

The flight was called and the scrum began to get onboard as they were telling people if they were in Boarding Group 5, you have no chance of overhead bin space and to just gate check the bags right there and then.  I got onboard and asked if Channel 9 was going to be active.  This was the first time in like 10 United flights that I was on a legacy United aircraft so was looking forward to some Channel 9.  But sadly… nope!  I was rudely informed by the FA that they would NOT be having Channel 9 on, even if I asked nicely.  I tweeted my displeasure about said incident.

The cabin was old school, but comfortable and it filled up pretty damn quickly.  Even though I was way down the back, by this stage I didn’t care.  I was to busy trying to keep my eyes open.  I read my book as we pushed back and headed over to the dual 1’s.  We lined up next to another aircraft and although I didn’t have Channel 9 I was kind of pretending I could hear it with my brain thinking “United 971 Cleared for Takeoff Runway 1 Right”

We took off (without a companion on the dual runways) and climbed into the sky.  The flight was going to be all sorts of boring.  Reading, nodding off, and a drinks run in the next 1 hour and 45 or so minutes.  Yay!  The only highlight of the flight was getting the whole can during the drinks service!  I was impressed at least.

I managed to finish my book and also have a bit of a chat with my seat mate as we descended into Seattle (maybe a 3rd client for the trip) and we touched down in Seattle with a nice thump.  Not bad!  We taxiied quickly to the N terminal where I was not in a hurry to get off as being up the back, I knew it wouldn’t be quick.  By the time I was off, it was onto the Train to the terminal, then the shuttle to the car park, then home to my apartment.

22 hours after I woke up in Newark… I was putting head to pillow in Seattle.  Way to long of a day 🙁
