When we visited Seattle a couple years ago in January, we had snow one night. The people that we were staying with were petrified of the snow and warned us to be home before it started in the evening. That was the day we went to Boeing, so I really didn't see that happening. Sure enough the snow didn't even start until 8 or 9 at night. When I woke up the next morning there were a few inches on the ground, no more than 6 (for us Northeasterners, 6" is a few inches), and soon it started to rain. Again we were warned not to go out that morning so we stuck around a little later than normal. By the time we headed out the roads were clear, and by the time we got home that evening it looked as if it had only rain.

I've always found it funny how different parts of the country deal with different amounts of snow. A what classifies as a major disruptive storm in Georgia is barely a nuisance in New York. I just learned a couple weeks ago that how the National Weather Service determines alerts for winter weather varies depending on the region. For example the threshold for a winter storm watch in New York City requires less total snowfall in a 24 hour period than it does where I live an hour north. Thanks for sharing your experience, Mal.
